What else can Tadalafil do for you?

Tadalafil (Cialis)is a medication that is FDA approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction as well as benign prostatic hyperplasia/urinary retention. It is in a class of oral medications called PDE-5 inhibitors. Tadalafil’s benefits in improving erection quality and treating erectile dysfunction have been well known for some time but increasing evidence has shown the benefits in cardiac, respiratory and muscle tissues (Clave’ et al, Cong Heart Disease 2019; Aversa et al, Endocrine 2017). Tadalafil’s main action is to relax the smooth muscle cells of our vasculature and, thus, cause widening of blood vessels and increased blood flow. You can see why this would be beneficial for erectile tissue, but the actions of this medication are also found in cardiac, lung, muscle and many other tissuesas well. Actually, the original trials on this class of medication were intended to improve blood pressure and angina (chest pain), butpatients were found to have an unexpected benefit with better erections (Goldstein et al, Sex Med Reviews 2019).

By relaxing the smooth muscle vessels of the heart and lungs you can increase healthy blood flow to these areas. Improvements in conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension, congestive heart failure, stroke, coronary artery disease, and diabetic vascular disease are just a few of the areas where tadalafil is being investigated for its potential benefits.

There is even growing speculation of the benefits of tadalafil on muscle recovery and exercise output. While these claims are not yet founded by medical studies, there is growing interest in evaluating the many benefits tadalafil might offer beyond just sexual function. Talk to your medical provider and find out if tadalafil is appropriate for you.
